Position Overview
SubCom is seeking an experienced Senior Power Design Engineer to lead the electrical design and development of next-generation, high-reliability power systems for undersea and terminal-based telecommunications equipment. This position is ideal for a lead engineer with strong high-voltage and power electronics expertise who is interested in advancing into a senior leadership or director-level role.
The Senior Power Design Engineer will develop innovative analog, digital, power, and high-voltage circuit designs involving microcontrollers, FPGAs, and electro-optic components such as photodiodes, modulators, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), variable optical attenuators (VOAs), and lasers. Working within a multidisciplinary team, this individual will help guide products through the complete realization process—from initial concept and circuit design through prototyping, qualification, manufacturing transfer, and production support.

Key Responsibilities
Lead the design, simulation, development, and verification of high-voltage, power, analog, and digital circuits.
Develop reliable power architectures for undersea and terminal-based telecommunications equipment.
Design power circuits incorporating DC/DC converters, fuses, soft-start circuits, protection mechanisms, low-noise techniques, and bypass filtering.
Lead products through the complete realization process, including concept development, component selection, prototyping, design verification, qualification, and manufacturing transfer.
Select electrical components based on performance, reliability, availability, cost, and long-term product requirements.
Collaborate with printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) CAD designers to develop board layouts and manufacturing files.
Work directly with PCB vendors, component suppliers, distributors, and application engineers.
Lead and participate in technical design reviews, requirements reviews, and Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) activities.
Plan, document, and execute design verification testing for new products.
Perform hands-on laboratory testing and troubleshooting of prototype components, circuits, circuit boards, and assemblies.
Identify design risks early and develop effective technical and manufacturing risk-mitigation strategies.
Ensure circuit designs meet applicable environmental, electrical safety, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.
Develop graphical user interface (GUI) software tools to support circuit-board testing, design verification, and firmware integration.
Define firmware requirements and lead the integration and testing of firmware on new circuit assemblies.
Develop manufacturing test procedures and Manufacturing Testing Requirements.
Support early factory testing, production readiness, and the resolution of manufacturing-related technical issues.
Analyze test data, evaluate circuit performance, and apply design-of-experiments principles to resolve complex engineering problems.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers while preparing for broader leadership responsibilities.
Build productive relationships with internal partners, external suppliers, and manufacturing teams.
Conduct all business activities with integrity and in accordance with SubCom’s policies, procedures, and core values.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline; equivalent advanced experience may be considered.
At least 10 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
Extensive experience designing high-voltage and power electronic systems.
Strong background in analog and digital circuit design, analysis, and simulation.
Experience developing power circuits using DC/DC converters, fuses, soft-start circuits, filtering, protection circuitry, and low-noise design techniques.
Experience designing circuits capable of passing environmental, electrical safety, EMI, and EMC testing.
Experience with operational amplifier and transistor circuits used to detect, amplify, and filter signals below 1 GHz.
Knowledge of analog and digital control loops, digital-to-analog converters, analog-to-digital converters, logic devices, and processors.
Experience with communication protocols such as I²C, SPI, and RS-232.
Experience designing transimpedance and logarithmic amplifier circuits for photodiode-based optical signal detection.
Strong understanding of printed circuit board design standards, PCB fabrication, PCBA assembly, and manufacturing processes.
Demonstrated experience guiding electrical products from initial concept through qualification and production.
Advanced hands-on laboratory and troubleshooting skills involving circuit-board prototypes, electrical components, test instruments, and measurement techniques.
Experience developing test procedures, conducting design verification, analyzing data, and documenting results.
Experience writing firmware requirements and leading firmware integration testing.
Experience leading peer design reviews, requirements reviews, and DFMEA activities.
Strong technical writing, presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to clearly and persuasively communicate complex technical concepts.
Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to identify technical risks and recommend appropriate actions.
Strong attention to detail and a proven record of delivering high-quality results.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with OrCAD, LabVIEW, SPICE/PSpice, C/C++, Python, CVI, or similar engineering tools.
Experience developing GUI-based tools for design verification testing and firmware integration.
Familiarity with fiber-optic components, including couplers, wavelength-division multiplexers, filters, photodiodes, lasers, modulators, EDFAs, and VOAs.
Previous experience serving as a lead engineer or technical leader.
Interest in progressing into a senior engineering management or director-level position.
Experience designing high-reliability systems for telecommunications, medical devices, aerospace, defense, or another highly regulated industry.
