Lead Data Engineer – Data Interoperability
About the Opportunity
Velocity Tech has partnered with a leading health technology platform transforming how individuals access and engage with their healthcare data. Their platform unifies data across health systems, payers, pharmacies, labs, and connected devices to deliver a more personalized, accessible, and cost-effective healthcare experience.
The platform is already operating at significant scale, supporting tens of millions of users through major consumer and healthcare partnerships.
This is a fully remote opportunity.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Lead Data / Interoperability Engineer to take ownership of building and scaling next-generation healthcare data exchange solutions.
This is a strategic leadership role where you will drive the design and implementation of secure, real-time interoperability infrastructure, enabling seamless data flow across complex healthcare ecosystems.
You’ll lead a high-performing team while remaining hands-on in architecture and technical decision-making, playing a key role in bringing together fragmented health data into a unified, accessible platform.
What You’ll Do
Lead the design and development of large-scale, real-time data interoperability solutions supporting millions of patient records
Architect and oversee Patient Access APIs, Provider Directory APIs, and Bulk FHIR APIs in line with CMS Interoperability and Patient Access regulations
Drive adoption and implementation of FHIR standards and US Core guidelines across integration points
Design and scale data pipelines ingesting data from EMRs, HIE/HINs, wearables, IoT devices, and remote monitoring systems
Establish technical standards, architectural patterns, and best practices for interoperability solutions
Evaluate and implement interoperability platforms, tools, and vendor solutions
Design and build real-time data infrastructure using technologies such as Python, Spark, Prefect, Kubernetes, and modern AI/LLM-driven approaches
Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, fostering growth, performance, and technical excellence
Collaborate with product, clinical, and engineering teams to define and deliver interoperability requirements
Ensure data security, compliance, and privacy standards are embedded across all solutions
What We’re Looking For
8+ years of experience in healthcare interoperability and health IT
5+ years working with FHIR standards (FHIR R4 required)
3+ years in a technical leadership role managing data or interoperability teams
Proven experience delivering large-scale, real-time health data exchange solutions
Strong experience integrating with multiple EMR systems (5+ platforms preferred)
Hands-on experience with Patient Access APIs and Bulk FHIR APIs, ideally within CMS-regulated environments
Deep knowledge of HL7 FHIR R4, US Core Implementation Guide, USCDI, and ONC requirements
Experience with SMART on FHIR (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect)
Strong understanding of HL7 v2 messaging (ADT, ORM, ORU) and CDA/C-CDA standards
Experience with API security (OAuth 2.0, JWT, mTLS, API keys, rate limiting)
Familiarity with messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, Azure Service Bus)
Technical Skills
Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, or C#
Experience with frameworks such as Node.js, Spring Boot, .NET Core, Django, or Flask
Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB)
Experience working with data formats including JSON, XML, FHIR, HL7, and CSV
Knowledge of data validation and schema validation tools
