SoHookd is a fast-paced mission driven startup backed by Google, Morgan Stanley, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Jumpstart Nova, and others. This position offers an exciting opportunity to grow within a mission-driven and high impact organization.
The Role:
The Lead Engineer is responsible for the technical leadership and delivery of our engineering teams. This role bridges strategy and hands-on execution — mentoring engineers, driving architectural decisions on GCP, and partnering cross-functionally to build reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems. The Lead Engineer is both technically strong and people-focused, with a deep understanding of modern software engineering practices and cloud-native development on Google Cloud Platform.
Responsibilities:
Report directly to the CEO. Duties include but are not limited to:
Lead and mentor a team of engineers, fostering a culture of AI fluency and continuous improvement.
Drive the integration of GenAI development workflows and tooling into product features and internal engineering workflows.
Evaluate and guide adoption of GenAI-assisted development tooling — including prompt engineering best practices, model evaluation, and responsible AI use.
Partner with Product on sprint planning, execution, and delivery.
Track and improve DORA metrics (deployment frequency, lead time, MTTR, change failure rate).
Conduct 1:1s with engineers.
Partner with security and compliance teams and consultants on SOC 2 readiness and technical audits.
Drive architectural and operational improvements to ensure scalability, maintainability, and AI-readiness across our GCP infrastructure.
Ensure smooth collaboration across functions — Product, Development, and Business.
Qualifications:
6+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a formal leadership or staff-level role.
Proven ability to lead, grow, and retain cross-functional engineering teams.
Hands-on experience building with Claude AI or the Anthropic API (prompt engineering, tool use, context management).
Strong hands-on experience in Node.js, Next.js, and with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Solid understanding of agile delivery, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices on GCP.
Strong full-stack or backend technical foundation with experience shipping production systems at scale.
Strong technical communication skills with the ability to translate complexity for both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience with code review, technical documentation, and engineering process improvement.
Experience in SOC 2 or other compliance-focused environments is a plus.
Familiarity with workflow based systems (e.g. Temporal) is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary target range $140,000 - $150,000
