Hardware Design Engineer
Location: On-site Morrisville, North Carolina (Research Triangle Area)
Travel: Occasional domestic and international travel may be required
Annual Salary: $150000.00
Position Overview
We are seeking a Hardware Design Engineer to join an innovative product development team focused on next-generation Raman Spectroscopy and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technologies.
This role is ideal for an engineer with strong experience in mixed-signal PCB design, board bring-up, and low-noise electronic systems used in advanced scientific instrumentation. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams developing benchtop and handheld optical instrumentation used across healthcare, environmental monitoring, security, food safety, and materials science applications.

Key Responsibilities
Design and maintain PCB schematics using Altium or comparable PCB design software
Generate manufacturing-ready design documentation and orderable packages
Develop low-power electronic designs for battery-powered instruments
Design and integrate:
Microcontrollers, FPGAs, CD and CMOS image sensors, Low-noise analog front ends, Power supplies, Mixed-signal communication interfaces, Battery controllers, Laser diode drivers
Use SPICE and related simulation tools to validate circuit performance prior to fabrication
Lead board bring-up activities, including power validation and timing analysis
Analyze waveforms and signal integrity using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and laboratory instrumentation
Lead cross-functional design reviews related to:
Grounding
EMI/EMC mitigation
Cable harnessing
Electro-mechanical integration
Collaborate with firmware and FPGA engineers on:
Pin assignments
Interface architecture
Memory selection
Communication protocols
Partner with PCB layout engineers on placement and routing reviews
Support regulatory and compliance testing, including:
IEC 61326
IEC 61010
FCC Part 15/18
Troubleshoot electrical issues related to manufacturing, assembly, and customer RMAs
Recommend components and connectors based on product requirements
Contribute to ongoing product development and engineering initiatives
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline
5+ years of experience using Altium or comparable PCB design tools
Strong background in digital and mixed-signal circuit design
Experience using oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and electronic lab instrumentation
Experience with revision control systems such as Git, BitBucket, or Allspice
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with soldering, board inspection, and hardware rework
Familiarity with firmware development or scripting tools such as Python
Experience working with spectroscopy, optics, imaging systems, or scientific instrumentation
