Role Description The FPGA Design Engineer role is a full-time, on-site position based in Frederick, MD. In this role, the engineer designs, implements, and verifies FPGA-based digital systems, including writing and optimizing HDL code (such as VHDL or Verilog) and integrating IP cores. Daily responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams to define system requirements, creating architecture specifications, and performing simulation, synthesis, timing analysis, and hardware debugging. The engineer will work closely with electrical and systems engineers to ensure seamless integration of FPGA designs into larger products, prepare technical documentation, and support design reviews. Additional tasks may involve working with CAD tools for board-level design considerations, contributing to product design decisions, and supporting prototype development and testing.
Qualifications
Strong design engineering skills, including experience with FPGA architecture, HDL coding (VHDL/Verilog), simulation, synthesis, and verification.
Electrical engineering knowledge relevant to digital circuit design, signal integrity, timing analysis, and hardware bring-up.
Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) tools for PCB or system-level design, and familiarity with integrating FPGA components into broader hardware systems.
Background in product design, including requirements analysis, system architecture definition, and participation in design reviews and documentation.
Mechanical engineering awareness is beneficial for understanding enclosure, thermal, and physical integration considerations in complex products.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Proficiency with industry-standard FPGA toolchains (e.g., Xilinx, Intel/Altera, or similar), version control systems, and lab equipment for testing and debugging.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication, and ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary engineering teams on-site.
