Job Summary: The Filter Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, analysis, and testing of RF and microwave filter products, components, and integrated subassemblies supporting high-performance aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. This role works closely with cross-functional engineering, manufacturing, and customer teams to develop innovative filter solutions that meet demanding electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements.
The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in RF/microwave filter design, simulation, prototype development, and production support, along with the ability to lead technical efforts on complex programs from concept through production release.
Essential Job Functions
Design and develop RF and microwave filters, components, and subassemblies using synthesis, modeling, and simulation tools.
Apply engineering principles and industry-standard techniques to research, analyze, design, test, and optimize RF and microwave products.
Design lumped element, cavity, and/or printed filter solutions for a variety of high-frequency applications.
Analyze electrical, mechanical, thermal, and environmental requirements to develop robust and manufacturable design solutions.
Utilize RF simulation and analysis software to predict circuit performance and validate design concepts.
Prepare detailed engineering documentation including schematics, bills of material, assembly drawings, test procedures, and manufacturing instructions.
Select and specify components, materials, and manufacturing processes required for product implementation and production.
Lead technical design efforts for complex integrated assemblies and support cross-functional program execution.
Review customer specifications and develop preliminary designs and technical concepts in support of quotations, proposals, and business development activities.
Coordinate and direct prototype and qualification testing activities to ensure compliance with functional specifications and customer requirements.
Analyze test results, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement design modifications as required.
Support transition of products from development into full-scale production, including documentation updates and engineering change implementation.
Collaborate with manufacturing and operations teams to improve production efficiency, yield, workflow, and process consistency.
Provide technical guidance to drafting and mechanical design personnel regarding product layout, assembly design, and documentation standards.
Interface directly with customers to support technical discussions, design reviews, and problem resolution activities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
5–8 years of experience in RF/microwave engineering, filter design, or related high-frequency product development.
Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
Desired Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics preferred.
10+ years of direct experience in RF and microwave filter design and development.
Strong knowledge of RF/microwave theory, filter synthesis techniques, transmission lines, impedance matching, and electromagnetic behavior.
Experience designing lumped element, cavity, combline, interdigital, suspended substrate, and/or printed filter technologies.
Proficiency with RF simulation and design software such as Genesys, Microwave Office, ADS, HFSS, CST, S/Filsyn, or PCFilt.
Experience with non-linear analysis, electromagnetic simulation, and mechanical integration of RF products.
Working knowledge of manufacturing methods including machining, plating, soldering, tuning, and assembly processes associated with RF and microwave hardware.
Hands-on experience using RF and microwave test equipment including:
Vector network analyzers
Spectrum analyzers
Signal generators
Oscilloscopes
Power meters
Pulse generators
Experience with mechanical CAD tools such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and program management teams in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and technical leadership skills.
Work Environment
On-site position within a manufacturing and engineering environment.
Regular interaction with engineering laboratories, prototype assembly areas, and production operations.
May require occasional lifting, standing, and hands-on support of prototype builds and testing activities.
