Introduction:
At EDMS Australia, we’re a proudly Australian-owned engineering, construction and advanced manufacturing company delivering certified design, fabrication and project solutions that matter. With engineering facilities in Cairns and a major fabrication workshop in Townsville, we support critical sectors across Defence, Renewables, Mining, Sugar, Resources and heavy industry. We don’t just design - we build. From 3D terrestrial scanning and laser cutting/welding through to full-scale installation, our integrated teams turn complex mechanical challenges into reliable, constructible, and cost-effective outcomes that keep Australian industry moving.
We’re growing fast (100+ strong and expanding) and we’re looking for an Experienced Mechanical Engineer who wants to lead meaningful work in a dynamic, hands-on environment. Based in our Cairns Design Office, you’ll drive end-to-end mechanical system design and delivery while enjoying the lifestyle advantages of Far North Queensland - the Great Barrier Reef, tropical weather, and a genuine work-life balance that’s hard to find in the big cities.
Relocating to Cairns? We actively support great engineers who bring strong technical foundations and the right attitude. We know attracting top talent to regional Australia can be challenging, so we’re open to candidates with solid potential who are eager to develop alongside our experienced team.
Description:
What You’ll Do
Lead the development of mechanical engineering solutions from concept through to commissioning, ensuring alignment with client needs, budgets, timelines and EDMS standards.
Perform and verify advanced engineering analysis (load, stress, thermal) using SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent FEA/CFD tools.
Develop, review and authorise high-quality engineering documentation, calculations, design reports, material specifications and test plans.
Apply and interpret Australian Standards, Codes of Practice and client specifications while guiding junior engineers and designers.
Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Senior Engineers, Designers, Drafting teams, Workshop Production and site personnel to deliver practical, constructible and optimised solutions.
Conduct site assessments, engineering investigations and provide authoritative technical support during fabrication, installation and commissioning.
Scope and estimate engineering work packages and contribute to technical and commercial proposals.
Perform peer reviews and sign-off on design packages to maintain the highest levels of quality and compliance.
Champion continuous improvement in design processes, documentation and project delivery.
Skills and Experiences:
Essential
What we’re looking for
Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor’s Degree).
Proven experience in the design and delivery of mechanical systems within industrial, infrastructure or heavy fabrication environments.
Strong proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor or similar) and engineering analysis tools (FEA/CFD).
Sound understanding of Australian Standards, regulatory requirements and fabrication/constructability principles.
Excellent communication and leadership skills - able to provide clear technical direction and mentor less-experienced team members.
Construction White Card, current Australian driver’s licence and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Australian Citizenship or a clear pathway to achieve Citizenship.
Highly regarded
RPEQ registration (or willingness to work towards it - we’ll support you).
Experience in heavy fabrication, pressure vessels, piping, welding or related disciplines (ASME, API, AS standards).
Exposure to project scheduling, cost estimation or procurement.
While extensive experience is ideal, we value potential and attitude just as highly. If you’re a capable mechanical engineer ready to step up, thrive in a collaborative regional setting and contribute to tangible, high-impact projects, we want to hear from you.
What We Offer
Competitive remuneration package (commensurate with experience).
Opportunity to work on diverse, challenging projects with direct end-to-end ownership.
Professional development support, including pathways to RPEQ registration.
A supportive, team-oriented culture that values initiative, practical problem-solving and continuous improvement.
The lifestyle benefits of living and working in Cairns - shorter commutes, access to world-class outdoor recreation, and a genuine community feel.
Occasional travel to our Townsville workshop and project sites (with appropriate support).
EDMS Australia is committed to safety, quality and engineering excellence. If you’re ready to bring your expertise (or your strong potential) to a company that values real-world impact and practical innovation, we’d love to talk.
Apply now with your resume and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant experience and why you’re excited about this opportunity in Cairns.
EDMS Australia is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applications from all backgrounds.
