About the Position
As an Armor Engineer, you will play a key role in the research, development, and qualification of next-generation armor solutions. This position is within R&D and Armor Development and supports both internal research initiatives and CR&D programs. You will work hands-on with materials, testing, and design, partnering closely with project management, sales, production, and external test laboratories. This role combines technical depth with cross-functional collaboration and gives you direct ownership of armor concepts from early design through testing, certification, and production support.
This position is based in Integris’ office in Hebron, OH, and reports directly to the SVP of Engineering. Up to 20% of international travel is expected.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
Design and develop new armor solutions optimized for performance, weight, and cost
Evaluate new ballistic materials, concepts, and suppliers for use in current and future projects
Execute IR&D and CR&D projects in line with defined project plans
Initiate, plan, and coordinate the manufacturing and ballistic testing of armor samples
Support Preliminary Design Reviews (PDRs) with technical analysis, data, and recommendations
Coordinate armor testing and certification activities (e.g. NIJ certifications, First Article Testing) with external laboratories
Document development efforts through detailed technical reports and presentations
Support Sales and Business Development with technical input, armor concepts, and proposal documentation
Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) for proposed armor solutions to support pricing and bids
Provide technical support to production, including failure analysis and corrective action activities
Ensure all development activities comply with internal procedures, security requirements, and export controls
Manage the R&D laboratory and oversee R&D technicians supporting armor development activities

What We Expect from You
Your Work Experience, Education, & Skills
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field. Master’s degree is a plus
Min. 5 years of experience in armor development, ballistic protection, or related defense engineering roles
Experience working within the defense industry and regulated environments
Hands-on experience managing development projects through a formal lifecycle management (LCM) process)
Experience using Design of Experiments (DOE) in materials or armor development
Strong understanding of ballistic materials, performance trade-offs, and testing methodologies
Ability to support proposal development with technical descriptions and costed solutions
Strong technical writing, documentation, and presentation skills
Structured, detail-oriented mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Comfortable working cross-functionally with engineering, production, sales, and external partners
Willingness to travel up to 20%
Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance and handle sensitive or classified data
