The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.

Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description Summary

We have excellent career opportunities for Engineer A/B/C (Electrical - Program Projects) who is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, to achieve the objectives of the Authority.

Requirements

Strong familiarity with NFPA-70 National Electrical Code.

Lead a team of junior engineers, assign and track tasks and projects to support program project delivery.

Familiarity with New York City Building and Electrical Codes and relevant industry standards of practice in professional electrical engineering design.

Experience in the design of electrical power systems, including service room layouts, distribution systems, and load calculations.

Proficiency in the design of low-voltage systems such as public address, data/telecommunications, and IP based security camera systems.

Expertise in fire alarm system design, with in-depth knowledge of FDNY requirements.

Knowledge of NYC Energy Conservation Code (2020/2025) and experience with lighting and control system design.

Understanding of contract documents for engineering projects and the ability to administer them during the construction phase.

Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced environment.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

Oversee and manage assigned electrical engineers, including workload distribution, maintenance of assignment logs, and assisting the Design Manager in performance evaluations of staff.
Support and assist the Design Manager in managing program projects overseeing the design process to ensure alignment with SCA objectives and standards.
Coordinate and lead meetings with SCA departments, other city agencies, and project stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
Lead and/or participate in negotiations and mediations; review, evaluate, and recommend proposed settlements, including additional services, for management approval.
Ensure compliance with project schedules, budgets, applicable codes, standards, and SCA requirements, track and obtain approvals from all regulatory agencies.
Oversee day-to-day project activities and resolve complex managerial, administrative, and operational issues.
Monitor and track the status of RFIs, shop drawings, and other submittals; ensure timely review and response in accordance with SCA standards.
Conduct site visits/observations and ensure preparation and distribution of field reports.
Review and evaluate design documents for quality, constructability, value engineering, commissioning, phasing, and adherence to SCA design criteria.
Support the development and implementation of SCA technical standards, guidelines, and best practices.
Assist Design Manager with special projects, initiatives, and process improvements.
Additional responsibilities as described in each title below and perform related duties, as assigned.

Engineer – A

Responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed. Provide overall coordination for in-house design projects. Perform and/or supervise the preparation of scope, pre-schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications.

Engineer – B

Engineer B may direct lower-level Engineers, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists, Associate Engineers, and Engineering Technicians. Work on several more complex design projects such as large primary schools, small intermediate schools, special types of buildings (e.g., special education schools), full modernizations, large additions, and specialized and/or numerous CIP projects.

Engineer C

Responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, and manages team members and internal stakeholders on projects to achieve the objectives of the Authority. Works as a project leader on multiple, complex construction projects and major design and exploration programs to plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise the work of stakeholders such as Engineers, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, and Engineering Technicians.

Current New York State Professional Engineer license must be maintained for the duration of employment for all levels.

Civil Service Classification: Competitive

Competitive Salary Dependent Upon Experience

Engineer A: $83,314 – $129,892

Engineer B: $97,304 – $151,643

Engineer C: $102,653 – $166,781

Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointment rate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of active City or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate or step.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning: a minimum of four years of experience specializing in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work; this can be any combination of pre-licensure and post licensure work; post-licensure work is not required. Plumbing and Drainage: a minimum of four years of experience specializing in plumbing and drainage work; this can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work; post-licensure work is not required. Structural: a minimum of four years of experience specializing in structural work; this can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work; post-licensure work is not required.
