Embedded Software Design & Verification Engineer

Location: Rockford, Illinois or Plano, Texas (Onsite/Hybrid based on project needs)
Duration: 12-month contract + extensions
Industry: Aerospace / Safety-Critical Embedded Systems
Language Requirement: Advanced English

Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Design & Verification Engineer to support high-impact aerospace and safety-critical engineering projects. This role focuses on the development, verification, and validation of embedded software within regulated environments following DO-178C DAL A standards.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in Embedded C development, software lifecycle processes for avionics or safety-critical systems, and exposure to FPGA verification and debugging activities. This position requires collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support software architecture, development, testing, traceability, and compliance documentation.

Responsibilities
Participate in the complete Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) following DO-178C DAL A safety-critical standards
Perform software requirements analysis and capture
Support software architecture and detailed design
Maintain and manage requirements traceability
Update and maintain embedded source code to align with DO-178C compliance
Conduct SDLC reviews and support lifecycle audits
Prepare and maintain DAL A software development documentation
Develop and execute test procedures and test scripts
Support FPGA verification and debugging activities
Perform hardware and software debugging and issue resolution
Create technical reports, design analysis documentation, and support engineering investigations
Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and verification teams

Required Qualifications
7+ years of experience in Embedded Software Engineering
Strong hands-on experience with Embedded C
Experience working within DO-178C DAL A safety-critical environments
Knowledge of avionics or regulated embedded software development processes
Experience with:
Ethernet
SPI
RS485
CAN
I2C
Experience with requirements management, traceability, and compliance activities
Strong debugging and troubleshooting capabilities for both hardware and software
Experience with software verification and validation activities

Preferred Technical Skills
Experience with the following tools and technologies is highly preferred:
DOORS
Git
MS Visio
AMD Vitis
ARM C Compiler
Lauterbach Trace32
FPGA verification and debugging
Pre-SOI audit support experience

Additional Requirements
Active security clearance is not required
Experience in aerospace, avionics, or other safety-critical industries is highly preferred

Nice to Have
Experience supporting ITAR-regulated projects
Previous experience in avionics or aerospace certification environments
Familiarity with safety-critical software compliance documentation and audit preparation
