Location: Rochester, New York

Type: FTE/Permanent

Job Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days - totaling 80 hours worked - and have every other Friday off

Job Description

  • Join our team as a Digital Hardware Engineer and play a critical role in advancing the next generation of embedded digital hardware supporting the company's Software Defined Radios (SDR) and accessories.
  • Reporting to a Senior Engineering Manager, you will take ownership of the full hardware lifecycle—from conceptualizing high-level requirements to seeing your designs move through manufacturing and into the field.
  • This is an opportunity to solve complex integration challenges within a cross-functional environment, ensuring our communication systems meet the highest performance standards.

Essential Functions

  • High-Speed Digital Protocols: Comprehensive technical knowledge of embedded microprocessor design and integration for ARM Cores, DDR memory interfaces, and high-bandwidth USB and Ethernet.
  • Design Simulation & Analysis: Proficient use of simulation tools such as LTSpice for circuitry, HyperLynx for signal integrity, and MATLAB for system-level modeling.
  • Advanced Architecture & PCB Design: Proven ability to lead the full design cycle—including requirement analysis, schematic capture (using Mentor VX/DxDesigner), and complex high-speed layout analysis.
  • Verification & Validation (V&V): Expertise in executing subsystem and system-level test plans, using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) to identify and resolve critical hardware defects.
  • Compliance & Reliability Engineering: Experience designing for MIL-STD-461 (EMI/EMC) and adhering to IPC standards to ensure hardware survivability in high-reliability environments.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility: Ability to obtain and maintain a US Security Clearance.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience: 6+ years of relevant experience (4+ with a Master's degree) or 10+ years of experience in Digital Design in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with SDR architectures, embedded SW/VHDL, and configuration management tools like Agile.
  • SDR & RF Architecture Mastery: A nuanced understanding of Software Defined Radio (SDR) architectures and the interaction between digital boards and RF circuitry.
  • Hardware-Software Integration: Experience using embedded software, scripting (e.g., Python), or VHDL to automate design analysis and facilitate rapid troubleshooting.
  • Configuration & Lifecycle Management: Proficiency with Agile PLM software to manage product data and streamline manufacturing introduction.
  • Diagnostic Tool Proficiency: Familiarity with Boundary Scan tools (JTAG) for testing high-density PCBAs where physical probe access is limited.
  • Systems Thinking: The ability to visualize cross-disciplinary impacts, such as how digital design choices affect thermal management or software latency.
