Job Summary

This role owns the analog design work for a line of optical measurement instruments. You will design and maintain analog and mixed-signal circuits from DC to 2 GHz, including small-signal amplifier chains, precision data-acquisition systems, and DC-DC power supplies. You will work alongside digital and embedded engineers across the full design life cycle, from concept through schematic capture, prototyping, and production release. You will also write a portion of the test code used to support manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Design and maintain analog and mixed-signal circuits from DC to 2 GHz, including small-signal amplifier chains, precision data-acquisition systems, and DC-DC power supplies
Design low-noise photodiode front ends and signal conditioning circuits for optical measurement instruments
Select components and complete schematic capture, then work with a technician who handles the PCB layout
Design analog circuitry so the board meets the requirements of its digital sections (FPGA and microcontroller based subsystems)
Analyze circuits using SPICE simulation and bench testing, and document the results clearly
Write test and tooling code in C#, C, or C++ to support manufacturing (about 20% of the role)
Assist manufacturing in developing test procedures and diagnosing issues during production startup of new products
Define testing and acceptance criteria for finished products
Provide engineering support to customer service and marketing when field issues call for electrical engineering expertise
Participate in design reviews and contribute to cross-functional project teams
Track trends and innovations in components, technologies, and techniques relevant to the product lines
Continuously improve the performance, reliability, and manufacturability of the products
May lead projects of broad scope to develop and introduce new or significantly enhanced products into manufacturing
May mentor less experienced engineers

Qualifications

Required

BSEE or MSEE, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
2 or more years of hands-on experience designing analog and mixed-signal circuits
Demonstrated experience with low-noise signal chain design and data-acquisition systems
Proficiency with SPICE simulation and analytical circuit design, from concept through physical PCB realization
Experience with PCB CAD tools and a solid understanding of component placement and signal routing for mixed-signal boards
Working knowledge of microcontroller programming and embedded systems
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and prioritize effectively

Preferred

Experience with Altium Designer or comparable PCB design tools
Experience designing DC-DC power supplies
Familiarity with Microchip PIC microcontrollers and the associated toolchain
Familiarity with Xilinx FPGAs and the associated toolchain
Knowledge of high-performance industrial test and measurement instrumentation
Exposure to fiber-optic test and measurement techniques, including OTDRs
Experience working as both a team contributor and a project lead
