Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Iterna LLC, Bolingbrook, IL
Job Type: Full-time
Experience Level: Mid/Senior Level
About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled Electrical Design Engineer to join our team, specializing in the design and development of circuit boards for battery packs and power solutions. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing schematics, creating PCB layouts, and writing microcontroller firmware. This role is critical to developing innovative battery management solutions that meet performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Circuit Design & Development
Design schematics and PCBs for battery packs and battery management systems (BMS).
Select and integrate power management ICs, MOSFETs, microcontrollers (Microchip PIC, ARM, etc.), and communication interfaces (I2C, SPI, CAN, UART).
Design analog and digital circuits, including current sensing, voltage regulation, and protection circuits.
PCB Layout & Manufacturing Support
Develop high-density, multi-layer PCB layouts.
Work with fabrication and assembly vendors to ensure DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) best practices.
Embedded Systems & Firmware Development
Develop and debug firmware for Microchip PIC microcontrollers (or similar MCUs).
Implement battery charging algorithms, fault detection, and communication protocols.
Work with low-power embedded systems and ensure efficient power consumption.
Testing & Validation
Develop and execute test plans to validate circuit board designs.
Debug hardware and firmware issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab tools.
Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards (UL, IEC, ISO).
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with mechanical engineers to integrate electronics into battery enclosures.
Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve assembly processes and yield.
Support failure analysis and troubleshooting of field issues.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
5+ years of experience designing printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA).
Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools.
Proficiency in microcontrollers and embedded C programming.
Experience with battery management systems (BMS), power electronics, and safety circuits.
Knowledge of electronics testing, debugging tools, and regulatory compliance.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with high-power battery packs (e.g., lithium-ion, NMC, LFP).
Knowledge of communication protocols (I2C, SPI, CAN, RS-485).
Familiarity with wireless charging and energy storage systems.
