SMT, Inc., a leading precision sheet metal fabrication and electro-mechanical assembly manufacturer, is seeking a CAD Drafter / Programmer to join our Engineering team. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and enjoys translating concepts into precise, production-ready designs.
You will play a key role in supporting product development, improving manufacturing efficiency, and ensuring high-quality output across our operations.
Position Summary
The CAD Drafter / Programmer is responsible for developing and refining product designs using CAD software, generating flat patterns and programs for fabrication, and supporting production through accurate and efficient design solutions. This position works closely with Engineering, Sales, Estimating, and Production teams to ensure components are designed for manufacturability, quality, and performance.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with Sales and Estimating teams to support product design and development initiatives
Create CAD drawings, flat patterns, and CNC programs for laser cutting and fabrication
Develop and model assemblies to verify form, fit, and function
Design fixtures and jigs to improve manufacturing accuracy and efficiency
Troubleshoot and resolve design or production issues during manufacturing
Evaluate existing processes and recommend improvements for efficiency and quality
Support vendor and component selection, including tooling recommendations
Ensure designs meet customer requirements and applicable industry standards
Perform additional duties as needed to support engineering and production goals
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Associate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
Minimum 2–5 years of experience in design, drafting, or process engineering in a manufacturing environment preferred
Sheet metal fabrication experience strongly preferred
Technical Skills
Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
Strong blueprint reading skills, including geometry and trigonometry fundamentals
Experience generating flat patterns and manufacturing programs
Familiarity with sheet metal materials and fabrication processes
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.)
Additional Skills
Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and quality
Effective communication and collaboration skills
Work Environment
Primarily office-based with regular interaction on the production floor
Exposure to typical manufacturing conditions including noise, dust, and equipment
Occasional, limited travel may be required
