Lead Electrical Design Engineer – Industrial Refrigeration Systems
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Design Engineer to lead the electrical design and development of industrial refrigeration, heat pump, and chiller systems. This individual will serve as the technical lead for assigned engineering projects, taking ownership of the complete electrical design from concept through manufacturing, testing, and field startup.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing electrical control systems for industrial refrigeration equipment, including CO₂-based systems, PLC controls, power distribution, and AutoCAD electrical schematics. This role works closely with customers, manufacturing, quality, service, and suppliers to deliver innovative, reliable, and cost-effective engineered solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the electrical engineering design for industrial refrigeration, heat pump, and chiller projects.
Assume full technical responsibility for assigned electrical engineering projects from concept through completion.
Design complete electrical systems including:
Electrical schematics
Wiring diagrams
Control panel layouts
Component layouts
PLC architecture
Controller I/O layouts
Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Sequence of Operations
Develop electrical power distribution and control systems for industrial refrigeration equipment.
Specify electrical and electronic components based on project requirements and company standards.
Design and integrate PLC-based control systems for refrigeration, heat pump, and chiller applications.
Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Sales, Service, and Quality teams throughout product development.
Work directly with customers to understand system requirements and translate design intent into engineered solutions.
Coordinate with vendors, consultants, business partners, and Engineering of Record (EOR) firms to define component and system requirements.
Support manufacturing during assembly, testing, system verification, commissioning, and field startup.
Troubleshoot electrical and control system issues during production and startup.
Review and improve electrical standards, engineering processes, and documentation.
Evaluate emerging technologies in electrical controls, refrigeration systems, power distribution, VFDs, and electronic components.
Participate in engineering design reviews and technical presentations.
Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on assigned projects.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Minimum 7 years of electrical engineering experience in industrial refrigeration, heat pump, or chiller system design.
Proven experience leading electrical engineering projects.
Strong knowledge of:
Industrial refrigeration systems
Heat pumps
Chillers
PLC controls
Electrical power distribution
Industrial control panels
Electro-mechanical systems
Extensive experience developing:
Electrical schematics
Wiring diagrams
Sequence of Operations
PLC I/O layouts
Electrical Bills of Material
Proficiency using the latest version of AutoCAD Electrical.
Ability to create electrical drawings from scratch and modify existing designs.
Strong understanding of:
Circuit design
Industrial electrical components
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
Relays
Electrical protection systems
Electronic controls
Experience selecting electrical components based on system performance requirements.
Excellent communication and customer interaction skills.
Strong organizational, analytical, and project management abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing transcritical CO₂ refrigeration systems.
Experience with:
Cascade CO₂ systems
CO₂ secondary systems
Parallel compressor systems
Three or more years of direct CO₂ refrigeration design experience.
Experience with refrigeration manufacturers or OEM equipment design.
Knowledge of application engineering software and engineering design tools.
Experience supporting new product development and sustaining engineering.
Understanding of business operations and engineering cost impacts.
Experience leading technical problem-solving teams.
Ability to prepare and deliver technical presentations to customers and internal stakeholders.
Continuous improvement, Lean Manufacturing, or Six Sigma experience is a plus.
