Quality Design Engineer – Power Division
QE1 / QE2 / QE3 (Level based on experience)
Location: Kansas City, MO (Client Headquarters)
Work Arrangement: Primarily onsite with hybrid flexibility based on project phase; occasional travel to project sites or supplier facilities
Department: Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)
Reports To: Engineering Quality Manager (EQM)
Company: Our Client – Power Division
About the Role
Our client, a top-tier North American EPC contractor, is seeking a Quality Design Engineer to join their Power Division team in Kansas City. This role sits at the intersection of engineering and quality — you will be the technical gatekeeper responsible for reviewing design documentation produced by internal engineering teams and validating it against company standards, client expectations, and industry codes before it moves forward.
This is not a field QA/QC inspection role. You will spend the majority of your time in the design office reviewing drawings, calculations, specifications, and engineering deliverables across mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines. You will work on a portfolio that includes combined-cycle power plants, renewable energy facilities, and large-scale energy infrastructure projects across North America — partnering closely with multidisciplinary teams across the full EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Scope and ownership scale with experience level (QE1 – Entry | QE2 – Mid-Level | QE3 – Senior):
Review design deliverables — drawings, calculations, specifications, P&IDs, one-lines, equipment data sheets — and validate them against internal company standards and applicable industry codes
Identify gaps, errors, and non-conformances in engineering documentation and partner with design leads to drive resolution
Provide design greenlight / hold-point approvals to allow deliverables to move forward to procurement and construction
Develop, implement, and manage project-specific Quality Plans and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) as they relate to design and engineering work
Drive Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Corrective Actions (CA), and Preventive Actions (PA) for design-related quality issues
Interface with engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and client QA teams to ensure design intent is preserved through execution
Manage QA/QC documentation, design review records, turnover packages, and project closeout requirements
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior quality team members (QE2 / QE3)
Support supplier quality audits, subcontractor design oversight, and system completions as needed
Ensure compliance with industry codes including ASME, AWS, NEC, IEEE, and ACI, as well as client specifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Industrial, or related discipline)
2–10 years of design engineering experience in power generation, EPC, or heavy industrial sectors
Hands-on experience producing design deliverables (drawings, calcs, specs) — you know what “good” looks like because you have done the work yourself
Working knowledge of construction practices and how design decisions impact field execution in EPC environments
Strong interpersonal, documentation, and problem-solving skills — comfortable holding design engineers accountable to standards
Flexibility to support occasional travel to project sites or supplier facilities
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in a design review, design checker, squad check, or design assurance role
Familiarity with QA systems, design quality processes, or engineering management of change (MOC) workflows
Experience with welding/NDE inspections or electrical testing is a plus
Certifications such as ASQ CQE/CQA, AWS CWI, or equivalent are a strong advantage
Experience working across multi-discipline teams (mech / elec / civil / I&C) on power generation projects
Why Join Our Client – Power Division
Work for one of the most respected engineering and construction firms in North America
Help deliver high-impact energy infrastructure that powers communities across the U.S.
Collaborative work culture with clear long-term career growth paths and a defined senior-leadership track
Competitive salary, performance bonuses, full benefits, and relocation support if needed
Access to training, certifications, and mentoring from senior engineering leaders
