Job Description
Develop 2D/3D CAD models for ballistic helmets, components, and tooling
Conduct FEA simulations, feasibility studies, and tolerance analysis
Collaborate with industrial design teams to balance performance and human factors
Produce engineering drawings, BOMs, and documentation
Evaluate ballistic materials (UHMWPE, aramid, hybrid composites)
Optimize composite lay‑ups, resin systems, and molding techniques
Partner with suppliers on advanced material development
Build prototypes using molding, lay‑up, and additive manufacturing methods
Coordinate ballistic, impact, and environmental testing to NIJ, MIL‑STD, and ISO standards
Analyze test data, identify failure modes, and refine designs
Coordinate regulated testing through certified laboratories
Support tooling design, mold development, and production process optimization
Improve manufacturability, cost, and repeatable ballistic performance
Assist with quality plans, inspection methods, and validation activities
Manage project schedules, prototype builds, and test cycles
Prepare internal/external reports, documentation, and presentations
Collaborate with suppliers, labs, and cross‑functional teams
Research new materials, lightweight structures, and modular helmet technologies

The Successful Applicant
A successful Design and Development Engineer should have:* Bachelor's in Mechanical or Materials Engineering (Master's preferred)
2-7+ years in product design or development (defense, composites, PPE ideal)
Hands‑on composites manufacturing and ballistic materials experience
Strong CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred)
Experience with FEA tools (ANSYS, ABAQUS, HyperWorks)
Knowledge of composite lay‑up and molding processes
Strong analytical, communication, and technical writing skills
Ability to work cross‑functionally and manage multiple projects
Preferred
Background in military or law‑enforcement PPE
Familiarity with lean/DFM/DFA
Experience with rapid prototyping and CNC machining
