Betwixt is an AI agent startup. We're building a core agent product alongside custom enterprise solutions for clients who need agentic systems tailored to their workflows. The work spans deep AI/agent engineering, real product shipping, and direct technical conversations with enterprise customers.
We're early. The first few hires will define how the company builds, what we ship, and who we become.
The role:
This is a founding engineer role on a CTO track. You'll be one of the earliest technical hires, writing the code, making the architectural calls, and helping shape the technical direction of the company. As the team grows, you'll grow with it — the path to CTO is real, not theoretical, and it's earned through the work.
You won't be a manager on day one. You'll be the person building the agent system, designing the infrastructure that lets us deliver custom enterprise solutions repeatably, and sitting in technical conversations with the first enterprise customers.
What you'll do
Architect and build the core Betwixt agent — orchestration, evals, tool use, memory, the whole stack
Design the foundations that let us ship custom enterprise solutions without rebuilding from scratch each time
Lead technical scoping and delivery for enterprise engagements, including some direct customer conversations
Make the early technology choices: model providers, frameworks, infrastructure, eval methodology
Set the engineering bar — code quality, testing approach, how we ship
Help hire the engineers who come after you
Who we're looking for:
You've shipped real software in production and have strong opinions about how to do it well. You've worked on AI/LLM systems beyond the demo stage — you know what breaks at scale, why evals matter, and how to make agents reliable enough for enterprise use.
You're comfortable context-switching between deep product work and bespoke client deliverables. You can talk to a technical buyer at a Fortune 1000 in the morning and debug a tool-calling loop in the afternoon. You like ambiguity and don't need a roadmap handed to you.
A few things that would stand out:
Production experience with LLM agents, tool use, RAG, or eval frameworks
Background as a senior IC at a fast-moving startup, or as a forward-deployed engineer at an AI company
Prior founding experience — even a project that didn't work — counts for a lot
Strong systems and infrastructure instincts
Track record of shipping fast without making a mess
You don't need to check every box. If the role sounds like the thing you've been waiting to do, apply.
What this is and isn't:
This is equity-only. You should be in a position to take that bet, and we'll be transparent about the company's stage, runway, and path. If you're looking for a salaried senior engineering job, this isn't it — yet. If you want meaningful ownership in an AI agent company at the moment when the technical foundations get set, this is exactly that.
You'll work directly with the founder. The decisions you make in the first six months will still be visible in the codebase three years from now.
