Backed by a newly raised $400M investment fund, the company is expanding its utility-scale BESS portfolio in Japan with over 3 GWh of projects already in development. As the business transitions from developer to long-term asset owner and operator, this is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping the technical standards and engineering strategy for a growing independent power producer.
We are seeking an experienced Design Engineer to lead the technical design of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System projects from early-stage development through construction and commercial operation.
This role will own the Basis of Design, drive engineering optimization, and coordinate with internal project teams, OEMs, EPC contractors, and utilities to ensure robust, cost-effective, and operationally optimized project designs.
Key Responsibilities
BESS Plant Design
Lead electrical and system design for utility-scale BESS projects, including:
DC architecture
PCS and inverter systems
AC collection systems
MV/HV substations
Grid interconnection
Develop and review:
Single-line diagrams (SLDs)
General arrangement drawings
Equipment specifications
Protection and control schemes
Communication architectures
Coordinate civil design related to equipment foundations, access, and logistics.
Support technology evaluation and supplier selection for batteries, PCS, transformers, EMS/SCADA, and balance-of-plant equipment.
Interface with utilities, EPC contractors, and equipment vendors to finalize technical requirements.
Maintain project Basis of Design documents and internal engineering standards.
Conduct engineering due diligence on new development and acquisition opportunities.
Produce preliminary layouts, SLDs, and operational assessments to support permitting and investment decisions.
Assist with interconnection applications and technical study inputs.
Provide technical input to operations teams to troubleshoot design-related performance issues and optimize plant performance.
Qualifications
7+ years of experience in electrical or power systems engineering.
Hands-on experience designing utility-scale BESS projects (required).
Strong understanding of:
High-voltage systems
Protection and controls
Grid interconnection
Renewable energy plant design
Experience producing engineering documentation and technical specifications.
Familiarity with international codes and ability to adapt designs to local standards.
Self-starter with a practical, solutions-oriented mindset.
Ability to collaborate across international teams; flexibility to work with stakeholders in Japan is beneficial.
