Metalcraft Automation Group , a division of Metalcraft of Mayville, Inc. , is expanding and looking for a driven Automation Mechanical Engineer to help engineer and support automation systems for manufacturers across a wide range of industries. At MAG, we engineer, build, integrate, install, train, and support turnkey automation solutions that solve real production challenges and deliver measurable ROI for our customers. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys hands-on problem solving, robotics integration, mechanical system design, and seeing projects move from concept through startup.
Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the Automation Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design and configuration of established automation system platforms for customer-specific manufacturing applications. The ideal candidate is creative, technically strong, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced collaborative environment alongside controls engineers, technicians, project managers, vendors, and customers.
Responsibilities
Modify, configure, and support established automation equipment platforms, robotic cells, tooling, guarding, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) to meet customer production requirements
Develop complete 2D and 3D mechanical designs, assemblies, and detailed fabrication drawings
Create system layouts, installation drawings, and manufacturing documentation
Support automation concept development and feasibility reviews with the sales and engineering teams
Perform robotic reach studies, sizing analysis, and mechanical integration planning
Select and specify mechanical and pneumatic components for procurement and system integration
Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure component quality, performance, and compatibility
Support projects from initial concept through build, debug, installation, and customer startup
Assist in troubleshooting technical and mechanical design challenges during project execution
Maintain project documentation, BOMs, and engineering records within SAP and PDM systems
Participate in project reviews to help ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget
Research and stay current on emerging automation technologies, robotics, and manufacturing trends
Leverage and improve existing automation platform designs while supporting customer-specific adaptations and continuous product improvements
Build strong working relationships with customers, vendors, and internal teams
Support cross-functional collaboration with Sales, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing, and Electro-Mechanical Technicians
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Recent graduates encouraged to apply
Strong 2D and 3D CAD and mechanical design experience
SolidWorks and PDM experience preferred
Creo experience a plus
AutoCAD experience is a plus
Experience designing or supporting automated equipment, robotic systems, tooling, or custom machinery preferred
Strong understanding of fabrication methods including sheet metal, weldments, machining, and assembly processes
Ability to transform conceptual ideas into practical, manufacturable solutions
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
Effective communication and project coordination abilities
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams including Sales, Automation Controls Engineering, and shop floor Electro-Mechanical Technicians
Proficient with Microsoft Office products
SAP and FANUC robotics experience is a plus
