Applications Engineer - Industrial Heat Pumps

Location: Remote
Travel: 20-40%
Base Salary: $120,000-$135,000

We’re working with an established manufacturer in the industrial heat pump and decarbonization market to find an Applications Engineer who can support technical sales, system design, and project development across North America.

This is a high-visibility, customer-facing role supporting industrial heat pump applications for commercial and industrial projects. The right person will bring strong HVAC system design knowledge, hydronics experience, and the ability to work closely with sales teams, consulting engineers, contractors, and end users throughout the project lifecycle.

What you’ll do
Partner with the National Sales Manager and Regional Sales Managers to support sales growth and project development
Support Trane offices, independent reps, consulting engineers, contractors, and end users with technical application guidance
Participate in customer meetings, lunch-and-learns, technical presentations, and design discussions
Review mechanical plans, specifications, and project requirements to recommend the right industrial heat pump solution
Assist with hydronic system design, heat recovery applications, chilled water systems, boiler replacement applications, industrial/process heating systems, and heat pump integration strategies
Size and select equipment using selection software, Excel-based tools, and factory engineering resources
Support technical discussions around equipment performance, operating envelopes, controls integration, and system efficiency
Prepare and support technical submittals, equipment schedules, P&IDs, budgetary performance data, and project-specific engineering documentation
Coordinate with factory engineering, controls teams, and R&D on custom applications and non-standard configurations
Provide technical support during bidding, design development, equipment review, and post-order engineering activities
Assist with startup planning, troubleshooting support, and field technical guidance when needed
Maintain accurate project records, selections, and customer interactions in CRM systems

What we’re looking for
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline preferred
3-7+ years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC systems, applications engineering, mechanical system design, or technical sales support
Strong understanding of HVAC system design, hydronic systems, heat transfer principles, chillers, boilers, heat pumps, and mechanical equipment integration
Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, construction documents, P&IDs, equipment schedules, and specifications
Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to lead technical discussions with engineers, contractors, and customers
Comfortable in a customer-facing environment and supporting sales teams throughout the project lifecycle
Self-motivated with strong organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills

Preferred experience
Industrial heat pumps, electrification, or decarbonization technologies
BAS and HVAC controls familiarity
BACnet, Modbus, or controls integration exposure
Experience supporting consulting engineers, OEM equipment manufacturers, or HVAC rep firms
Experience with Trane, Carrier, Daikin, Johnson Controls, or similar commercial HVAC platforms
PE or EIT is a plus
