Qualis LLC is seeking a skilled Mid-Level Tool Design Engineer to join our team supporting cutting-edge aerospace programs. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, modeling, and documentation of tooling solutions used in the manufacturing and assembly of complex aerospace hardware. You will work cross-functionally with engineering teams and interface directly with program stakeholders to deliver high-quality, review-ready tool designs that meet program requirements.

Duration of this contract 1099 job is expected to be 6 months. This is a fully remote position but may require travel to on-site customer or manufacturing facilities.

Essential Duties:

3D & 2D Tool Design Modeling

Develop complete 3D and 2D models and engineering drawings using CREO and/or CATIA software

Produce drawings in .CATDrawing or .drw file formats in accordance with program standards

Ensure all models and drawings are fully complete and ready for peer review and final approval prior to submission

Incorporate review feedback and manage drawing revisions

Requirements Development

Develop and/or assist in developing tooling requirements for each tool created throughout the program lifecycle

Prepare and/or assist in preparing requirements material slides for design or requirements reviews

Produce presentation slides in .ppt file format, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with program objectives

Collaborate with systems and program engineering teams to ensure requirements are traceable and complete

Design Review Content

Develop presentation slides for formal design reviews, based on provided Concepts of Operations (CONOPs) for each tool

Produce design review presentations in PPT for tools designed, ensuring content is comprehensive and review-ready

Coordinate with engineering and program teams to ensure design review presentations accurately reflect tool design intent and CONOPs alignment

Tool Use Instructions

Author comprehensive tool use instruction documents for each tool designed, including but not limited to proper tool usage, inspection procedures, and maintenance requirements

Ensure instructions are clear, accurate, and suitable for use by technicians and operators in a manufacturing or assembly environment

Deliver all tool use instruction documents in Microsoft Word (.docx) file format

Coordinate with subject matter experts, safety personnel, and program teams to validate instruction content prior to release

Procurement Support Documents

Conduct and document analysis of available suppliers for tooling materials and components, including all supporting trade studies performed and supplier attributes considered (e.g., lead time, cost, quality, capability)

Create and maintain Purchase Order (PO) tracking documents to support procurement activities throughout the program lifecycle

Deliver all supplier analysis and PO tracking documents in .xlsx file format

Provide any supporting tools developed for analysis or tracking purposes in their original source file format

Stress Analyses

Perform load analyses for tools designed to verify structural adequacy under expected operating conditions

Execute load analyses using hand calculations or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models as required by the complexity of the tool and program requirements

Submit FEA analyses and associated models in ANSYS file format

Submit hand calculations in Microsoft Excel or MathCAD format

Ensure all stress analyses are traceable to tool requirements and are review-ready for program milestones

Minimum Required Experience

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field

3–6 years of experience in tool design or manufacturing engineering within aerospace, defense, or a related industry

Proficiency in CREO and/or CATIA for 3D modeling and 2D drawing creation

Experience producing engineering drawings in .CATDrawing or .drw format

Demonstrated ability to develop and document engineering requirements

Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint for preparing technical presentation materials

Strong attention to detail and ability to produce review-ready deliverables

Must be a U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain and maintain any necessary facility access credentials

Preferred Experience

Experience working on programs with NASA, commercial space, DOD space or other space/launch vehicle customers

Familiarity with requirement and design review processes and requirements management frameworks

Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) per ASME Y14.5

Knowledge of aerospace manufacturing processes, including composites, machined parts, and GSE tooling

Experience with WindChill PLM
