This position is accountable for the complex design of highway projects to provide construction plans meeting state and federal requirements.

The Department may require employees to perform functions beyond those contained in job descriptions. The Department may modify job descriptions based on Department needs. The Arkansas Department of Transportation is an "at will" employer.

Conceive, design, and evaluate various highway features and recommend alternates for inclusions in project plans.
Establish vertical alignment and right of way requirements for inclusion in plans.
Compile data, write reports and specifications in conjunction with design plans.
Compute project cost estimates and assemble estimated quantities for project plans.
Travel to project locations to view job sites or to attend project meetings as a subject matter expert.

Minimum Requirements

Education and experience: Possession of a current Arkansas license* to practice professional engineering or graduation from an EAC of ABET approved engineering curriculum or equivalent as judged by the Arkansas Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Highway design experience.

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of construction specifications and techniques. Strong organizational skills, ability to manage diverse project assignments, attention to detail, and demonstrated proficient oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook.

Working conditions: Office environment. In-state travel with occasional out-of-state travel.

Licenses, registrations and certifications: Engineer Intern certification required. Valid driver’s license.

(“EAC of ABET” means Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.)

The Department will consider applicants with Professional Engineering licenses from other states, with the condition that a reciprocal Arkansas license be obtained within 180 days of hire. Failure to obtain the Arkansas license within this time period may result in immediate termination. Candidates are responsible for verifying eligibility for reciprocity with the Arkansas PE Board before accepting a position.
